How To Save Energy When Using Your Air Conditioner

Summer is almost here, and with the warm and humid days ahead, it will soon be time to crank up the A/C. So before you rack up your electric bill, these energy saving tips will help you keep your home cool as a cucumber without wasting any extra energy:

Check The Vents.

To save energy but still keep your home cool— close all vents and doors leading to your basement. Since cold air drops, closing your basement vents will cause your cooling system to spend more time cooling off the more occupied parts of your home. Besides, the basement is naturally the coldest place in your house, so cranking the air conditioner is usually not needed.

Lower The Temperature.

When away from home or sleeping— lower your cooling system. Keeping your house cold while it’s empty is not only a waste of energy, but it’s unnecessary. You should also avoid turning your A/C off completely when away. Keeping the cooling system running will help your system use less energy when it comes time to cool your home off again. Whenever possible, shut blinds and drapes to avoid excess sunlight and warmth. Another tip is to check to see if your system offers a “sleep mode” that you can set to help lower the energy output each night.

Service Your Unit.

The most important part of saving energy this summer is making sure your cooling system is running at it’s best. Clean filters regularly to avoid build up of pet hair, dust, and debris. A dirty filter can cause the cooling system to work overtime and waste energy. Look for leaks around the system, and keep the area around the machine clear of shrubs. Most importantly, be sure to schedule regular maintenance with a professional. This will prevent any little issues from becoming big ones.
