When the repetitive sound of that slow drip hits your sink, it can be frustrating and plain out wasteful — but what if we tell you it could be an easy fix? Sometimes a pesky leaky faucet can be an easy DIY repair that will just take some dissecting and a wrench to find the issue. So if you are currently dealing with a slow drip, here’s how to get to the root of the problem:

Find The Leak

When that pesky leak comes, the first thing you’ll want to do is identify where the slow drip is coming from. It could be a simple fix such as a washer, worn out seal, loose parts, or a water pressure issue. But before you can begin inspecting you’ll have to know your faucet.

Figure out Your Faucet Type

To know where it could be stirring from, you’ll want to know your faucet type. For example, the most common ones are ball faucets, cartridge faucets, or ceramic disk faucets. Knowing what faucet you have, will allow you to know what parts to dissect without causing any issues.

Turn off Your Water

Before you start any work be sure to turn off your water supply to avoid an unnecessary mess. You can find the handle usually under the sink that you can unscrew. Once the water is off, it’s time to get investigating!

Take Out the Wrench

The next step is to take out your wrench and begin looking for your leak culprit! You’ll want to remove anything decorative first. The next step is to loosen the packing nuts and stems and look for any damage. While you are there, check out the o-ring and replace the washer within the valve seat. A replacement washer is available at many home improvement stores and is relatively cheap too. Once you are complete place everything back together, turn on the water and test it out! If you are still experiencing a leak, your next step is to call in the professionals!
