How To Replace An Exterior Faucet

outdoor water spigot
|

Most homes in Connecticut are equipped with at least one outdoor spigot, which can be used to connect a hose, sprinkler, or similar water feature. Over time, these spigots can develop leaks, corrosion, and other forms of damage.

Replacing a damaged spigot can save you money by stopping wasteful leaks and preventing your outdoor wall from deteriorating. Here’s how to replace an exterior faucet:

What you will need:

  • A new spigot
  • Screwdriver
  • Pipe wrench
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Adjustable pliers
  • Plumber’s tape
  • Stiff-bristled brush
  • Towel

Steps:

1. Locate the main water shutoff valve. In most homes, this valve is located in the basement, near the front foundation wall. In warmer climates, it may be located in a small curbside box where your front yard meets the street.

2. Turn off the water supply. Tighten the adjustable wrench so it fits snugly on the valve, and turn 90 degrees. You may need to insert your screwdriver into the hole in the handle of the wrench to do this.

3. Open the spigot to drain the water. Allow excess water to drain from the spigot before removing it.

4. Remove the old spigot. Using your adjustable pliers, tightly grasp the pipe below the spigot. Then, tighten your pipe wrench around the body of the spigot and twist it off.

5. Clean the pipe threads. Use your stiff-bristled brush to remove any residue buildup on the pipe threads.

6. Wrap the threads in plumber’s tape. Start at the base and wrap the threads 2-3 times with plumber’s tape in a clockwise direction. This will help secure a tighter fit, and reduces friction between the threads.

7. Install the new spigot. Tighten the new spigot by hand as much as possible. Once you have reached your limit, wrap the spigot in a towel (for protection) and tighten further using your adjustable pliers.
