How To Stay Cool Without AC

Running your air conditioner all hours of the day, every day is not ideal. There are times you will want to give your system a break so it’s not overworked and your monthly bills aren’t through the roof. Luckily, there are multiple ways in which you can cool your home without running the air conditioner.

  1. Ceiling Fans – If your ceiling fan isn’t doing the job of keeping you cool, it’s probably spinning in the wrong direction. The fan should be spinning counter-clockwise in order to create a breezy wind chill effect that will cool you off.
  2. Refreshing Drinks – Staying cool can be as simple as sipping on a nice, cold glass of lemonade, iced tea, or iced water. These drinks will cool off your insides and you can even apply the glass to your body for instant relief. Areas like your neck and wrists are the perfect areas to apply a cool glass or ice pack.
  3. Blinds & Curtains – Natural sunlight that peeks into your home via the windows account for a large chunk of excess heat. Installing blinds or curtains on windows that face the sun can keep your home cooler by almost 20 degrees! Who knew that dressing up your windows with some fashion would be so efficient?
  4. Exhaust Fans – Bathroom fans pull warm, moist air from your bathroom and kitchen fans pull warm, smoky air from your kitchen. So turning these fans on during high temperature days will pull some of the warm air from your home. If your home has an attic fan then be sure to utilize that as well.
  5. Night Time – A hot spring or summer day can sometimes be unbearable. However, the nights can sometimes cool off and be quite pleasant. Use this time to open up the windows and naturally cool down your home. This is also the perfect time to use appliances that produce a lot of heat such as ovens, dishwashers, and dryers.

There are many ways in which you can stay cool while also giving your AC unit a break. You can also save money on your monthly energy bills by servicing your AC unit. When you need a tune-up, contact Tri-City Appliance, Plumbing, Heating & Cooling at (203) 303-5700.
