What You Should Know When Purchasing a New Home

Owning a new home is an exciting and nerve-racking time. As you begin to start putting your packing list together and begin transitioning into your new home, there are a couple of things you’ll want to move to the top of your list. It can be easy to miss a few key things during the transition process but here are the three things you won’t want to forget:

1. Change The Locks

The first thing all new homeowners should do the second they move in; change the locks. Leaving the locks that came with the house when you bought it will put you and your family at risk for any unwanted intruders that could still have a key from the selling process. Spend the few extra dollars to have the peace of mind that your family and your possessions will be safe from unwanted guests.

2. Check The Insulation

In order to keep warm air inside in the winter (and outside during the summer), your home will need to be properly insulated. One of the most ignored areas in your home where insulation should be plentiful is the attic. Without the right amount of attic insulation, warm air will seep into the attic, causing your heating system to work harder to warm the house. As a result, your monthly bills will be higher, wear and tear will be added to the furnace, and your home will still feel like it’s not warm enough.

3. Locate the Main

Before you do anything, make sure you know the exact location of your home’s main water shutoff valve. When a plumbing disaster strikes (which can happen at any time and more often than you think), you need to be able to stop the flow of water entering your house. By knowing where it is and how to turn it off, you can potentially save thousands of dollars in repairs and water damage restoration.

You don’t have to do something wrong to make a mistake as a new homeowner, sometimes the mistake is a lack of action.
