How Second Refrigerators Are Wasteful

How many people do you know have a second refrigerator in their home? Chances are it’s more than just a handful. With many larger families using these “backup” refrigerators, here’s why you should get rid of that old, beat up second refrigerator.

Why Do People Have Them?
Think about how far technology has come in the last 10 years. New refrigerators are far more efficient with a lot more features, compared to models from the decade before. Many people who have upgraded to these newer models have done so even if their old refrigerator wasn’t that old. So why throw out a perfectly good refrigerator? Most people think “let’s throw it in the garage for extra storage” — please don’t do this!

Why Not Have Two?
The idea of having twice the storage space certainly sounds enticing, but there are a lot of drawbacks. First of all, you replaced the refrigerator for a reason. Either it didn’t do a good job at cooling or because it sucks energy like there’s no tomorrow. The refrigerator will also most likely be placed in the garage where it will sit through cold winters and hot summers. These harsh temperatures will increase wear on the unit, causing it to work harder and utilize more energy. Not only will this second refrigerator cost more to run, but you will be running two refrigerators total. No matter the efficiency, running two refrigerators uses a lot of energy, which costs a lot of money.

If you are the not so proud owner of two refrigerators, consider recycling one of them. If you truly need the extra space, consider purchasing a larger refrigerator than the current one you have in your kitchen. However, no matter the refrigerator, Tri-City Appliance, Plumbing, Heating & Cooling will repair or install it for you! To learn more, or to schedule a service, give us a call at (203) 303-5700.
