Here's Why You'll Want to Insulate Your Pipes

|

The last thing you want to worry about this winter is a significant pipe freeze. By insulating your pipes, you are not only helping prevent your home from a major plumbing disaster, but you are also saving yourself money too. So if you haven’t already done so, here is why you’ll want to insulate your pipes this winter.

It Lowers Your Heating Bills

When plumbing pipes that carry hot water are insulated, the water temperature can rise almost 5 degrees higher than if they were left uninsulated. This will prevent the hot water from cooling off as they pass through the cold and exposed pipes. If these savings weren’t enough, you can also lower your hot water heater’s temperature to save even more on your heating bills.

It Prevents Bursts

When temperatures reach below 32 degrees Fahrenheit, the water inside of uninsulated pipes have a very good chance of freezing. So on those cold winter nights when it’s 10 degrees out, pipes that pass through your garage or crawl space can burst. This will lead to flooding, water damage, and mold growth — costing you hundreds, if not thousands of dollars to repair.

How to Insulate Your Pipes

Measure every single pipe that is exposed in your home, especially the first few feet that connect to the hot water heater and cold water inlet pipes. Purchase the measured amount of insulation and begin cutting the insulation into lengths that will be easy for you to install. Place the insulation on the pipes with the open seam facing downward. Tape the open seam and clamp the insulation down with a cable tie every couple of feet for a secure fit.
