3 Quick Plumbing Fixes Every Homeowner Should Know

Just because you’re a homeowner doesn’t mean you’re all of a sudden a professional plumber that can fix every plumbing emergency thrown your way. However, as a homeowner, there are a few plumbing problems you should learn how to fix. Knowing the basics of plumbing will help you temporarily fix a problem until the professional arrives.

Tiny Leaks
Small pinhole leaks are common, especially during a home remodel. When a nail accidentally punctures a plumbing pipe, a small leak can occur. To stop the leak while you wait for the plumber to arrive, drive a self-tapping screw and rubber washer into the pinhole leak. This will save you from having to deal with possible water damage or mold later down the road.

Clogged Sink Drains
First things first, grab your trusty sink plunger (the round one without the flange). Place the plunger over the drain and begin plunging, but make sure you don’t lift it up or else you’ll break the seal. If your kitchen has a double-basin sink, stuff a rag in the second drain opening to avoid having the contents of the blockage shoot out of the drain. If the plunger doesn’t work, try a hand auger or head to the phone so you can call the plumber.

Leaky Toilets
Having water pool around the base of the toilet can cause all sorts of problems. Grab a few towels and dry the area around the toilet so you can see exactly where the water is leaking from. Check to see if the tank is sweating, how the gasket between the tank and bowl is holding up, and if the water lines are properly tightened.
